BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES : The Landscape Picture Library - Landscape Photography by Graham Coleman
Pictures of Anglesey, Northwales, Landscapes of Anglesey, An Island sitting, above Bangor in the North West corner of Wales, UK, separated from Mainland wales by the Mennai Straits which can be crossed by Telford's Mennai Bridge and the Brittannia Bridge. Historically, crossing to Anglesey from the mainland was hazardous. Ferries crossed the Menai Strait at various places, but the currents are ver dangerous and numerous boats capsized or ran aground.
The most tragic incident occurred in 1785 when a boat carrying 55 people became stranded on a sandbar in the middle of the southern end of the strait. Attempts to refloat the boat left it swamped. The alarm was raised and rescuers set off from Caernarfon. But, the combination of high winds, nightfall and the fear of also running aground meant that the rescuers could not approach the sandbar. The tide rose as night fell and stranded group on the sandbar were swept away. Only one survived.
